What are your holiday traditions for greeting January 1? Do you make resolutions? Food plays a primary role in my family's celebration...black eyed peas, turnip greens, and cornbread grace our table every New Year's Day. Black eyed peas for luck, turnip greens for prosperity, and cornbread because my Daddy thought you couldn't have the other two without cornbread! We round out our meal with macaroni and cheese, fried green tomatoes, fried chicken, and pecan pie. Yum!!! Of course, there is always lots of football watching and knitting/stitching by the fire, too.

Have you heard the old saying that however you spend your time on New Year's Day will carry over into the new year? I can't think of any way I'd rather spend my time than with some sort of needle in my hand and, today, I did just that. I finished up a needlepoint Christmas ornament and I started a brand new stocking for my dear Rick. I'm working from the Churchmouse At Home Basic Christmas Stockings pattern. He chose the colors and design (the striped stocking on the left) and I'm quite pleased with how it's going, thus far. Here's a picture for you...
Como, by Debbie Bliss, is one of our favorite super chunky yarns...and it's super soft, made of merino wool and cashmere. We have a terrific pattern for a last minute cowl that you can knit up in a jiffy. Really - I made one in one evening while watching television. The pattern is free with your yarn purchase - a holiday happy from us to you. (Oh, and it's 20% off, too!)
The Christmas finishing deadline is rolling around quickly. All needlepoint to be sent off to our professional finishers must be in the shop by Friday, September 6 in order to guarantee having it back by Christmas. That may seem like a long way off, but actually it's only 9 weeks away! Need some incentive to go ahead and get those ornaments into the shop? Bring your stitched ornament (or ornaments) in during July and you'll have your name entered into our drawing for free finishing on a single ornament. Your name will be entered once for each ornament purchased from Serendipity Needleworks that you bring in, so the more ornaments you bring in, the better your chances are for having one of them finished for FREE.

Merry Christmas in July! yarnshopgirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06793944917572734143noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4277979888789331406.post-542999917935532902013-07-05T19:16:00.000-07:002013-07-05T19:16:41.325-07:00Visit with Melissa ShirleyJune was jam-packed with activities to kick off our summer at Serendipity! We took a trip up to Columbus, Ohio for The National Needle Arts trade show to see all the new products being offered in the world of yarn and needlepoint, and - WOW - what a show! There were all kinds of must-have goodies that we couldn't resist, so we want you to mark your calendar for July 17th now. That's when we'll be rolling out our own red carpet at Serendipity Needleworks to put the spotlight on these hot new items at our Market Preview Party.

Our special visit with Melissa Shirley of Melissa Shirley Designs was a real treat!

We're delighted that you all came out to give Melissa such a warm welcome! She'd never been to Alabama before and she had a wonderful time while visiting with us. Many new friendships were made and everyone who came walked away with a bit of stitching inspiration. Melissa was so kind in chatting with everyone about stitch selections, fiber choices and finishing options - it was a real treat to hear her suggestions. We also had a little "show and share". Customers brought in their finished projects and we all had a great time "oohing and aahing" over their hand stitched art. Before wrapping up this post, we have to ask...how are your needlepoint projects for Christmas coming along? It may seem like it's a long way off, but Christmas is actually less than 6 months away. YIKES! Our finishing deadline for Christmas is earlier this year than ever before! All items that you wish to have back for Christmas must be turned in by September 6 (sorry, no exceptions). There is still plenty of time to stitch, but now is definitely the time to get started. Whether you're creating a keepsake treasure to add to your holiday decor, or making a precious holiday gift, we have lots of terrific canvases from which to choose. Christmas ornaments, pillows, wall hangings, stockings, tree toppers, and more... we'll be glad to help you select the perfect project! See you soon... yarnshopgirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06793944917572734143noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4277979888789331406.post-54097862507013046122013-06-10T12:27:00.000-07:002013-06-10T12:27:47.705-07:00You Can Knit in the Summer!

When the weather begins to warm up (as it has been doing here in Tuscaloosa) there is no need to abandon your knitting until cooler days and nights return! There are plenty of projects and yarns that are great to work with in the summertime, and of course it is never too early to start thinking about knitting Christmas gifts!
We encourage you to look to the smaller gauge yarns, like Koigu! Hand painted in small batches, you will love knitting with this superior merino yarn. This is an incredibly versatile yarn that looks great as socks, fingerless gloves, hats, baby items, cowls and shawls. 1-2 skein projects are portable and are great for knitting while you are traveling or just relaxing outside. They work up so quickly, too, that you are likely to find yourself unable to stop. (Kind of like those Lay's potato chips!)
We would also like to invite you kick off your summer knitting by joining us this week as part of World Wide Knit in Public Week! We will have all kinds of fun activities at the shop every day to celebrate. The overall theme of the World Wide Knit in Public event is to promote better living through stitching together, so come to the shop and knit with us! This is a great chance to introduce a friend to knitting as we will be teaching people how to knit. When you knit in public this week, be sure to snap a photo! Send it to ellen@serendipityneedleworks.com with WWKIP picture in the subject line. We will share the photos on our Facebook page and in our Ravelry group. The photo with the most likes / loves will win a great goodie-filled project bag! What a great way to kick off summer, don't you agree?
Leaves are fully opened up on the trees and flower petals are opening up in a variety of shapes and colors. Let your surroundings inspire you to add some visual impact and drama to your project by working with textured stitches.

When knitting or crocheting, this can be as easy as working a ribbed stitch pattern or as complicated as intricate lace or cables. Consider the edges as a great place to experiment with texture. This Baby Wrap Sweater is adorable in squishy garter stitch and a delicate (but not difficult) ruffle, as shown in this shop sample. This same sweater made with an applied i-cord edging is perfect if you are looking for a more masculine item. The pattern calls for Koigu yarn, a wonderful fingering weight merino wool that is hand-painted in small batches. Baby items are great fun to work on in the warmer summer months as they are tiny and generally do not take a lot of time to complete!

Decorative needlepoint stitches can make your piece really pop! Just as when you first learned how to stitch, keep in mind that each starts and ends in a specific hole. Take care to think through your textured stitches as they may be worked over different numbers of canvas intersections, to see if they will work as full or partial stitches, and when you should work them. The end result is sure to give your piece dimension. Here we're sharing Esther's London Phone Booth ornament. Notice the stitches at the bottom, all those French Knots! Looks like a chilly night in London, doesn't it? If you need a quick refresher on how to work a French Knot, here is a great stepwise tutorial!

Until next time, happy stitching!yarnshopgirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06793944917572734143noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4277979888789331406.post-6201465420474343492013-05-16T11:26:00.000-07:002013-06-01T08:31:51.959-07:00Summer News & Events

Happy 2013! I hope your year is off to a terrific start. Ours sure is! We spent a fun-filled week last week with American Needlepoint Guild Senior Master Teacher, Sandy Arthur. Sandy spent three days sharing her love of needlepoint with us - and teaching us all kinds of wonderful decorative stitches and how to use them to make our canvases come to life! One of my favorite things about Sandy is that she always shares ideas on how to implement techniques you learn in her class on future projects. Here's our group hard at work!

And here's our happy group at Serendipity Needleworks at the end of the workshop (minus Pride and Alice T. who had to get on the road a little earlier in the day). It was such a wonderful three days - delightful stitchers, an awesome teacher, a darling project, and terrific food and true Southern hospitality at The University Club. What more could one ask?! Hmmmm, I think we'll have to do it again soon...say, in September?!!!

Tuscaloosa is all a-buzz about this weekend's SEC Championship game in Atlanta. Everyone is decked out in their crimson and white, giant "A"s are everywhere, and we're ready to cheer the Crimson Tide to victory! The game kicks off at 3:00 p.m. CST and, well, we're adjusting our shop schedule accordingly. We'll be open from 10:00 - 3:00 on Saturday. Our holiday workshop schedule has been altered and you can view the new schedule here.

We just got a new shipment of Crimson Pride yarn in yesterday, so come on down and we'll help you choose a new project to work on during the game. We have LOTS of Alabama themed canvases for our needlepointers, too. Finally, our SALE ends Saturday, so be sure you come by and take advantage of the unprecedented savings!

Until next time, happy stitching!

The hustle and bustle of the holidays is upon us! Take a 'time-out' from the frenzy and join us at Serendipity for some stitch therapy. Come down to the shop the first two weekends in December and learn a few new tricks - or get a gift project started. The cost of each workshop is $10 (+ materials) and preregistration is required. Space is limited to six participants on a first-come, first-served basis. (Please note that basic knitting and crochet skills are required for all workshops.)

Shoulder Cozy
1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

It's holiday's ultimate accessory: a capelet/cowl you can knit in an evening or two! Luxurious mohair and silk yarn makes this wardrobe staple extra yummy.

2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.<BR>
Classically styled fingerless gloves are quick and easy to knit. Knit them in luscious cashmere for a real treat, or use a sturdy wool tweed for daily use - either way, they're sure to please!

Felted Gingerbread Ornaments
4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

The knitting is as easy as pie - easier, actually. Once your knitted piece is fully felted, we'll help you simply cut your "dough" into jolly cookie shapes. Next, we'll help you decorate as desired with simple embroidery stitches. (Note: you must have your felted fabric ready to use for this workshop.)

Do you know of someone in a wheelchair? Is there a nursing home in your area? Think about knitting some lap robes. They are simple and fast to do and will be greatly appreciated by the recipients.

There are all kinds of patterns from which you can choose, but here's a really simple one for you to try...

You'll need 350 grams of worsted weight yarn (approximately 700 yards) and US size 8 or 9 knitting needles. Cast on 96 stitches. Work in garter stitch (knit every row) for 32 inches (or until yarn is almost gone). Bind off loosely and work any loose ends into the lap robe.

Making lap robes for others is a great group activity, too. Gather some friends (teach them to knit, if they don't know how) and enjoy the camaraderie that results when kindred spirits join together. You may choose to have a pastor bless the lap robes, including a small tag for the recipient that reads as follows: "This shawl was hand made especially for you. May you feel the warm embrace of our Heavenly Father as you wear it."

We knit for others on the first Thursday afternoon of each month here at the shop and I invite you to join us. Our schedule will be a little different for November, though - we'll meet on November 14 (Wednesday afternoon) from 1:00 - 4:00 instead of November 1. I'll be happy to help you choose some yarn and help you get started...just come on down and join the fun!

Until next time, happy stitching!

Fall is a wonderful time of year - bright orange pumpkins and colorful gourds artfully arranged on bales of hay at the Farmer's Market, friendly ghosts swaying from crepe myrtle trees in the neighbor's yard, and the first whiff of woodsmoke. All of these things proclaim the season - and they make me want to knit and knit and knit!

I'm not one of those "one-project-at-a-time" knitters. Nope...if I see something that I want to make, it's full speed ahead for me! I jump in with both feet and cast on with gusto, blissfully dismissing all of those other PIPs scattered around the house (and car, and shop...)! I know that I'll get back to them one day, but now - for this moment - my attention is on the delightfully springy and cheerfully colored bright blue yarn I'm using to knit our Mystery Cowl. I'm having a terrific time, so far. The pressure to finish is, somehow, diminished with this project. Perhaps it's because I only have one fourth of the instructions presented to me at a time and I feel that I can surely complete the required knitting before the next set of directions appears in my "in box" on Thursday. Whatever the reason, though, I'm happily knitting along on something that makes me smile every time I see it.

Won't you join me? We'll meet at the shop every Tuesday afternoon (from 1:00 - 2:30) in October to work on our Mystery Cowl. You can participate from home, too, if that's more convenient. There really are no rules - just lots of fiber-y fun. You may call me at the shop (205-758-0108) if you want to join the fun. I'll be happy to help!
We've had a tremendously busy summer at the shop and, alas, my blogging has suffered. I'm ever so sorry about that, dear friends, and will do my best to keep you in the loop, henceforward, on a more regular basis.

Lots of stitching has been going on around our big farm table and I'm delighted to say that our needlepoint numbers continue to grow. We've added lots of new stitchers to our circle of Serendipity friends and invite you to come on down and join the fun when you're in the neighborhood. There's always plenty of room to pull up another chair - and our ginormous candy dish stays filled to the brim with an assortment of CHOCOLATE! (Who could ask for anything more?!)

We have a couple of trunk shows in the shop now through the end of August. Princess and Me Designs and Winnetka Stitchery both offer a huge assortment of hand painted canvases from which to choose.

Until next time...

Oh my stars...I can't believe that it's been so long since I last talked with y'all! Life does get busy, doesn't it?

We received the Alabama map canvas that Raymond Crawford designed especially for us and I can hardly wait to begin stitching it. Jeanne, Kelly and I have pulled the fibers and my fingers are just itching to start. (The picture I've posted above shows all the luscious colors and textures we chose!) I'll keep you up to date on my project here with pictures and stitch selections, since so many of the canvases went to our out-of-town friends. We'll have ourselves an online stitch-along!

Well, it's nearly 10:00 and time for another fun-filled day at the shop, so I'd better go and unlock the door. Have a great day and I'll see you again soon.yarnshopgirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06793944917572734143noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4277979888789331406.post-91728531511980784272012-02-14T18:02:00.001-08:002012-05-09T08:04:33.406-07:00Raymond Crawford at Serendipity Needleworks!

10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

What a treat we have in store for us at the end of this week! Nationally renowned needlepoint designer and artist Raymond Crawford will be at Serendipity Needleworks on Friday, February 17 from 10:00 - 4:00. I hope you'll join us for a fun-filled day with him. We always have a ball when he comes to Tuscaloosa and I'm sure that this visit will be the best yet!

We'll have his latest masterpiece, our very own exclusive "Sweet Home Alabama", displayed for you to see and will be taking orders for the first shipment. It's definitely a piece that every stitcher with ties to our fair state is going to want!
We learned to think "outside the box" when it comes to choosing fibers for projects and we experienced - firsthand - the importance of gauge. That's in the Central Time Zone - same as Chicago, New Orleans, Dallas, and all kinds of other cool places. ; ) The shop is open from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and we'll happily answer all of your questions when you give us a ring at (888)248-4743.

The first ornament in the series is the happy little snowman pictured above (and on the last post, where he's shown already stitched.) His "bags" will be packed and he'll be shipping out on January 17. There are a total of 8 ornaments in the series and one will be shipped each month, so there should be plenty of time to get them finished for the upcoming holiday season. Our finishers will be delighted to wave their magic wands over your stitching, if you need help turning them into ornaments. (We'll share the details with you - just ask about finishing.)

Again, thank you for your overwhelming response to these darling gems for your tree.

Have a wonderful evening and, until next time, happy stitching!
Ellenyarnshopgirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06793944917572734143noreply@blogger.com0
